Spring is Here—Time to Head Outside
Each year around March or April, crews begin to emerge from their winter hiatus and prepare for heading out-of-doors. Wind farm developers plan and scope out prospective sites for their projects; wildlife biologists strategize over the preservation of fragile habitat; pipeline technicians schedule inspection and maintenance work; and forest fire responders ready themselves for rapid deployment.
Countless mobile professionals such as these depend on DeLorme’s GPS-enabled mapping and GIS products so it is no coincidence that spring is also a busy time for the XMap group. Call volume is higher, product shipments are increasing, and the training schedule is filling up.
Before you venture out, make sure you are equipped with the GIS software, GPS receivers, and maps that you need to get things done. To help with your preparation, we are giving away an Earthmate LT-40 GPS receiver with every copy of XMap® ordered before the end of March. See below for details.

XMap Spotlight
This month the spotlight focuses on a simulated search and rescue operation involving XMap. In this scenario, a backpacker has failed to return after a walk in the mountains of Western Maine, prompting an immediate response from several local and state agencies.

Data from several sources has been employed in this situation. The vector topographic map is DeLorme's XMap USA Topographic data, which is available for all XMap users. The aerial imagery was downloaded from the Maine GeoLibrary Web site. GPS track files, converted into a GIS layer is superimposed on a custom grid allowing the operations coordinator to ascertain which areas have yet to be covered by the search teams.

Finally key waypoints are incorporated into the map to help determine which direction the hiker may have wondered.
All of the map layers represented in this scenario can be easily transferred to the Earthmate PN-40 GPS receiver offering an indispensible visual reference for the search parties.
